GENERAL DUTIES:

Monitor cross walks / street intersections to ensure safe crossing by school children.

Pay Rate – $8.97/hour

Positions only work when school is in session.

These are part-time positions.  There are no benefits associated with these positions.


Potentially both regular shift and substitute positions available.

Regular positions

  • Normal shifts are 3 hours per day – 1½ hours in the morning and 1½ hours in the afternoon.
  • Hours are set based on the school assigned to.

Substitute positions

  • Work on as “as needed” basis to fill open shifts, cover for illnesses / vacations, etc.  Many times there will be limited or no advanced notice of when these positions would be called to work.
  • Shifts are 1½ hours in the morning and/or 1½ hours in the afternoon.  Hours are set based on the school assigned to.
  • No minimum number of work hours are guaranteed. When a “regular” shift opens, it is normally filled from the interested regular and substitutes crossing guards.

Assistant City Engineer

Assistant City Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Public Works                                DIVISION: Engineering GRADE: S-6 $46,613/yr

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs sub-professional engineering work in connection with the design, investigation, development, maintenance or construction of engineering projects. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
 Perform a variety of office oriented sub-professional engineering functions, including researching and preparing preliminary and final design drawings for public works projects throughout the City.
 Maintain records of projects and writes status reports.
 Responsible for producing finished construction drawings in every detail.
 Prepare preliminary specifications.
 Record progress of the project from bidding process through completion of project.
 Inspect projects for compliance with specifications.
 Perform problem and complaint resolution
 Write project estimates and field inspections for approval.
 Research and prepare specifications for the purchase of Public Works equipment.
 Research property and deed descriptions.
 Assist with the preparation of pre-bid construction estimates.
 Check contractor applications for payment before approving disbursements.
 Make a variety of measurements and calculations to facilitate determining the amount of payment contractors should receive for work completed and materials used.
 Supervise engineering assistants as required.
 Provide technical advice and assistance to other city units.
 Participate in review of the Memorial Bridge annual inspection report and coordinate any repairs as required.
 Performs related work as required.

Reports directly to the City Engineer.

REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering; 1 year engineering experience preferred; familiarity with computerized contract management, AutoCAD, and GIS training; or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training. Must have an Engineering Intern Certification. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Good oral and written communication skills. Requires the exercise of considerable discretion and independent judgment. Ability to maintain confidentiality and use discretion in dealing with sensitive information. Proficiency in organizing, prioritizing and multi-tasking. Competent in analyzing facts, exercising sound judgment and arriving at valid conclusions. Good interpersonal skills. Experience dealing with the public preferred.

Engineering Technician

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible for assisting in the development and completion of specified public works project(s) by providing technical assistance in infrastructure improvement, construction, mapmaking and technical drawings; inspection infrastructure projects; and approval excavation permits. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

 Develop and organize in-house infrastructure improvement projects and direct such projects through other division heads.
 Prepare engineering plans, specification, & estimate for infrastructure improvement projects.
 Perform routine investigation of municipal infrastructure problems.
 Research publications and other sources in order to develop revised design and construction methods for municipal infrastructure improvement projects.
 Revise official city maps as necessary.
 On-site work inspection to assure adherence to specifications in contacts and plans for construction and installation improvements (roads, sidewalks, storm sewers) by working with contractors and city personnel. (Shared duty with Assistant City Engineer)
 Administer the issuance of permits for excavation work within municipal right-of-ways.
 Assign and maintain all street addressing of city residences and businesses.
 Maintain a variety of records and prepares a variety of reports.
 Perform related work as required.

REQUIREMENTS: Associates Degree in civil engineering or related field, supplemented by relevant continuing education; experience and/or education in applicable civil engineering operations, preferably in a local government environment; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

AutoCAD & GIS or map making skills required. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Garage Machanic

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs semi-skilled and skilled mechanical duties in the maintenance and repair of City owned vehicles and equipment. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

1) Service all City owned equipment (diesel/gas), changing oil, adding various fluids as needed, replacing various filters, replacing windshield wipers, replacing light bulbs, lubricating as required, etc.
2) Perform minor repairs on City owned equipment (brake systems, fuel and hydraulic lines, electrical wiring, etc.).
3) Perform major repair operations (transmissions, rear ends, axles and brakes, etc.).
4) Rebuild packers (replacing floors and hopper bottoms, replacing or rebuilding hydraulic cylinders and packer panels, etc.).
5) Perform preventive maintenance checks and diagnosis.
6) Perform state inspections.
7) Perform winterizing and pre-maintenance on engines and equipment.
8) Make occasional field road calls, repairing equipment when possible.
9) Road tests equipment to assess problems.
10) Perform welding on equipment.
11) Prepare equipment for painting and perform minor equipment painting.
12) Repair and maintain shop equipment.
13) Perform pre-operation inspection of equipment, checking fluid levels, oil level, tire air pressure, motor belts, and general condition of automotive equipment.
14) Perform routine inspection and preventative maintenance on all City owned equipment and refer needed repairs to supervisor.
15) Maintain equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
16) Complete work orders after each task assignment.
17) Order and pick up parts and supplies from vendors as needed.
18) Performs related work as required.
Reports directly to the foreman or supervisor of the division.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Experience in automotive service work; graduation from a standard high school, supplemented by formal and/or informal training in the safe and effective maintenance and repair of automotive equipment; or an equivalent combination of experience and training. Diesel mechanic experience preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License. Possession of a West Virginia State Inspector’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to write, speak, hear and read. This position requires walking; lifting, reaching, carrying; stooping, bending, squatting; climbing, balancing; handling; physical coordination. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, dust or odors, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is also exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
