Sanitation - Medium Equipment Operator

Medium Equipment Operator – Sanitation

GENERAL DUTIES: Operates a solid waste collection vehicle with attached trailer (or vehicle of similar complexity), in a safe and efficient manner, to collect refuse and recycling throughout the City.  Sorts and packages recycling. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates solid waste collection truck with recyclable materials trailer on assigned routes, in a safe and effective manner, collecting refuse and recycling.
  • Picks up, carries and empties trash cans; carries and tosses waste bags; picks up debris and litter.
  • Operates mechanisms for loading and dumping refuse.
  • Collects and empties recycle bins.
  • Sorts and packages recycled materials for sale.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repair work on equipment as an aid to operations.
  • Performs general laborer duties as required.
  • Performs related work as required.

Reports to the Sanitation Supervisor or foreman.

Normal Hours:  Monday – Friday    5:00am – 1:30pm


REQUIREMENTS:   Considerable experience operating sanitation truck / trailer or equipment of a lesser complexity; possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by formal and/or informal training in the safe and effective maintenance and repair of equipment; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.  Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Ability to write, speak, hear and read; extensive walking; extensive lifting, reaching, carrying, stooping, bending, squatting; climbing; balancing; handling; physical coordination; receiving instructions; performing a variety of duties; operating machinery; noise of vibration; safety hazards; fumes, dust, or odors; equipment with moving parts; working with the public; driving vehicles; extreme heat or cold; wet or humid.


Starting Pay Rate – $12.71/hour

Substitute School Crossing Guards

Substitute School Crossing Guards

GENERAL DUTIES:

Monitor cross walks / street intersections to ensure safe crossing by school children.

Pay Rate – $8.00/hour
These substitute positions work on as “as needed” basis to fill open shifts, cover for illnesses / vacations, etc. Many times there will be limited or no advanced notice of when these positions would be called to work.

Shifts are 1½ hours in the morning and/or 1½ hours in the afternoon. Hours are set based on the school assigned to.

No minimum number of work hours are guaranteed. When a “regular” shift opens, it is normally filled from the interested regular and substitutes crossing guards.

These are part-time positions. There are no benefits associated with these positions.

Temporary Laborers

The City of Parkersburg is looking for Temporary Laborers.

These are temporary positions that will work until the end of the season or for a maximum of 1,040 hours.

  • The positions pay $10.00/hour. ($10.50/hr Parks Evenings & Weekends position.)
  • There are no benefits associated with these positions.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Working a temporary position could potentially lead to permanent employment when positions open.

 


Parks – Evenings & Weekends

Provide general care and maintenance in the City parks during evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities: include, but are not limited to: mow & trim property throughout the City. Clean parks, restrooms, shelters, etc. Assist with other general maintenance/repair tasks.

Requirements: Must possess a valid Driver’s License. Knowledge of, & ability to use, mowing & trimming equipment needed. Must have the ability to interact with the public professionally.

Normally scheduled 40 hours per week. This position works a rotating 2-week schedule of evenings & weekends.

Example:

Week 1 – Mon. & Tues. off // Wed. – Sun. 3:00pm – 11:00pm
Week 2 – Mon. & Tues. 3:00pm – 11:00pm // Wed. & Thurs. off // Fri. – Sun. 7:00am – 3:30pm

  • Pay rate for this position is $10.50/hr.
