School Crossing Guards

GENERAL DUTIES:

Monitor cross walks / street intersections to ensure safe crossing by school children.

Pay Rate – $8.97/hour

Positions only work when school is in session.

These are part-time positions.  There are no benefits associated with these positions.


Potentially both regular shift and substitute positions available.

Regular positions

  • Normal shifts are 3 hours per day – 1½ hours in the morning and 1½ hours in the afternoon.
  • Hours are set based on the school assigned to.

Substitute positions

  • Work on as “as needed” basis to fill open shifts, cover for illnesses / vacations, etc.  Many times there will be limited or no advanced notice of when these positions would be called to work.
  • Shifts are 1½ hours in the morning and/or 1½ hours in the afternoon.  Hours are set based on the school assigned to.
  • No minimum number of work hours are guaranteed. When a “regular” shift opens, it is normally filled from the interested regular and substitutes crossing guards.

Medium Equipment Operator – Sanitation

DEPARTMENT: Public Works DIVISION:                           Sanitation GRADE:H-6 $13.03/hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates a solid waste collection vehicle, in a safe and efficient manner, to collect refuse and recycling throughout the City. Sorts and packages recycling. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

1) Operates solid waste collection truck with recyclable materials on assigned routes, in a safe and effective manner, collecting refuse and recycling.
2) Picks up, carries and empties trash cans; carries and tosses waste bags; picks up debris and litter.
3) Operates mechanisms for loading and dumping refuse.
4) Collects and empties recycle bins.
5) Sorts and packages recycled materials for sale.
6) Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
7) Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
8) Performs minor maintenance and repair work on equipment as an aid to operations.
9) Performs general laborer duties as required.
10) Performs related work as required.

Reports directly to the Foreman or Supervisor.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the following: traffic laws and ordinances affecting equipment operation; safe and effective operation of the equipment assigned; first-line safety and preventive maintenance principles, practices, and procedures involving the equipment assigned. Skills: safe and effective operation of the equipment assigned; learning specific tasks through on-the-job training; operating a variety of equipment; performing maintenance and repair work. Abilities: understand and follow oral instructions and to read and comprehend instructions in the user manual of the equipment assigned; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public; carry out physical activities commensurate with the duties of the position in adverse environmental conditions; meet required work schedule.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Considerable experience operating equipment of a lesser complexity; possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by training in the safe and effective maintenance and repair of equipment; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (Class B).

Medium Equipment Operator – Streets

DEPARTMENT: Public Works                       DIVISION: Streets             GRADE: H-6 $13.03/hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and work in the upkeep and repair of City streets, alleys, storm swearers, etc. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

1) Transport heavy equipment by truck and trailer.
2) Haul materials (gravel, dirt, etc.) as needed.
3) Performs concrete work (sidewalks, streets, curbs, etc.): removal of old concrete, preparation of site, set forms and lay & finish concrete.
4) Lay pipe (storm water, gas, etc.): removal of old pipe, preparation of site, lay pipe, replace/ finish site.
5) Performs asphalt work (streets, alleys, etc.): removal of old asphalt; preparation of site; lay asphalt (haul, shovel and rake); run pavement rollers, read and set-up grades.
6) Operate Vac truck cleaning storm sewers.
7) Operates snow removal equipment to remove snow from City streets, parks and parking lots, and salts areas as needed. Shovels snow when needed.
8) Operates a variety of equipment, including various forms of trucks, dump trucks, trailers, tractors, trenchers, small backhoe, standard shift vehicles and equipment, chain saws, power tools and hand tools in a safe and effective manner.
9) Performs pre-operation inspection of equipment, checking fluid levels, fuel level, oil level, tire air pressure, motor belts, and general condition of automotive equipment.
10) Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on department equipment and refers needed repairs to supervisor. Perform minor repairs, if able.
11) Maintains equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
12) Performs related work as required.

Reports directly to the Streets Supervisor.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Considerable experience operating equipment of a lesser complexity; possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented by formal and/or informal training in the safe and effective maintenance and repair of equipment; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License. (Class A)

This position requires walking, lifting, reaching, carrying, stooping, bending, squatting, climbing, balancing, handling, physical coordination, receiving instructions and performing a variety of duties. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes, dust or odors, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is also exposed to a variety of extreme weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud.
